Greetings!  — This is the December issue.  Volume 05, Issue 12 — Posted November 19, 2025

This is Frank Mellott, KB3PQT writing to our Cumberland Amateur Radio Club Members.

I began writing this monthly column in November 2021.  At that time the COVID-19 virus was playing havoc with our meeting and event plans.  I envisioned the monthly column as a way of keeping club members in contact with what was taking place in their club.

Now, fifty issues later, this is the final edition of From The President’s Desk written by me.

Effective with my resignation as CARC President at the end of the November meeting, Vice-President John Luthy, WA3KCP became CARC President.

At the January 2026 meeting we will hold a Special Election to fill the now vacant Vice-President position.  I ask that you support Charlene Cash, WG3Q for Vice-President.

John and Charlene, supported by Secretary and Membership Secretary Maura Smith-Mitsky, KC3JJH, and Treasurer Doug Stenger, KC3CPT will make a great team.  But please remember — it takes the whole club, all 46 members, to make good things happen.

At the CARC Monthly Meeting the other night, someone asked me “What does the Club President do?”

That’s a fair question.  For 15 years Andrew, AF3I  produced the agenda, a newsletter, a website, all kinds of tangible rewards, planned meetings, planned events and lots of things I may not know.

I am lucky.  I have Andrew AF3I to turn these scribbles into website worthy material.  He turns the rough draft of the agenda into an agenda and newsletter.  Andrew was the “membership department”.  I rely on the Membership Secretary to handle the details.

Thanks to COVID-19 reducing expenses and some generous donors, I can rely on the Treasurer to simply provide funds without having to wonder how we pay for stuff.  The Secretary records the minutes.  The Trustee makes sure we have a license for K3IEC.

So what do I do?  I write this column 12 times a year. I write the rough drafts for 11 meetings a year.  I lead 11 meetings a year.  I say thank you to AF3I a lot!  I look for programs and either prepare them or find speakers.

In short, I don’t do a lot.  It takes a village and we have a good one, 45 members strong, soon to be 46.

Greetings!  — This is the October issue.

Volume 05, Issue 10 — Posted September 26, 2025

Fall!

Lots of radio events this month.  The State QSO Party sponsors save the best for last.

Pennsylvania QSO Party is October 11 & 12.  CARC will defend our York County Multi-Operator, Portable, York County title from Ponderosa Park in Dillsburg on Saturday October 11.  Setup begins about 9:00 a.m.  We will have lunch in our tummies and get on-the-air at Noon.  Sunset occurs at 6:34 p.m.  We need to be out of the park before dusk.  Depending on band conditions and resource availability we may choose to wrap up and depart sooner.

Lots of PAQP information appears at https://www.paqso.org

California provides us with a practice run one week before Pennsylvania QP.  Their event takes place Saturday October 4 and Sunday October 5, 2025.  Visit the CARC website Things To-Do calendars for additional information.

A great deal of CQP information can be found at https://cqp.com

The October monthly meeting is Wednesday October 15 at Hoss’s in Mechanicsburg.

This is an important meeting as among other things, we nominate officers for next year.

This year will need a volunteer to step up and serve as Secretary.

CARC members will once again provide communication support for the Fantastic Parade in Dillsburg, PA on Saturday evening October 18.  This is a fun community service event that gives you a behind the curtain review of one of the largest and best parades in the area.

Good Day,

For a long time I have known the difficult challenge our readers face when attempting to locate documents on the Club website.

Perhaps the SEARCH bar isn’t as helpful as it needs to be.

Perhaps there are too many choices.

So, for the past week or two I have been thinking about how to improve the website.  This morning I sat in front of my computer and whipped up a proposed change.  The change has been applied to ONE PAGE.
Know-How Resources >> Contesting

If you visit that page you will see the addition of a three-column matrix.  The three columns represent the structure of the information that follows.  The size of this matrix is big enough for us golden age folks to easily read the text, while being small enough to permit the reader to understand, in a single view, the Big Picture of what is posted on that page.

The matrix contains the titles of the published documents  – each with a link to the referenced article.
Each article has been given a unique HTML ID that enables the link to find the desired article.

A single click on the Document Title will take you to the chosen article.  One more click will open the PDF.  Read to your heart’s content.

I welcome your feedback.

73,

Andrew Forsyth   AF3I

September.  Back to school.  Football.  The road to the Major League Baseball World Series marches on.

Radio ramps up as well.  Cooler days can make POTA more fun.  State QSO parties, and the fall contest season, start to ramp up.

Whether it is your first-ever contest, or your first of the year, contesting can be a fun, rewarding, and skill building experience.

Please see https://www.radioclub-carc.com/resources/ for station ideas.

How well do you know your CARC colleagues?  You see them on Zoom.  You chat on-the-air.  Their eMail shows up in your in-box now and then.  But, do you really KNOW them?  Several of our most active members have contributed their Member Profile.  Follow the link to see who they are.  If you are inclined to put pen to paper we will publish your profile here as well.

Our incoming President has some ideas about more fully engaging more members in the operation of the club.  One of the keys to making this work is to have all the information they may need in one, easy-to-access, location.  With that theme as my inspiration, I have created the MEMBER QUICK REFERENCE page.   This page started with two types of information.  It will grow.   1.)  Representative scripts that our Net Control Stations use when the NCS calls the net to order.  2.)  The Zoom Web Meeting IDs and Passwords that exist somewhere else, but not so easy to find when they are needed.  Eventually the old location will be retired to de-clutter the MEMBER AREA menu.

The ARRL had a link to a very informative YouTube video on their website.  The video was produced by J. Mitch Hopper, K9ZXO and the Sangamon Valley Amateur Radio Club based in Springfield, Illinois. It was such a good presentation that I immediately said — CARC MEMBERS NEED TO SEE THIS ! ! ! !

Our Special Topic — Our Field Day page has a video player and a link to the YouTube channel where the Sangamon Valley Amateur Radio Club Field Day video is hosted.  Scroll down.  Look for the blue section.  You can’t miss it.  Click.  Enjoy.

CARC has a long-standing relationship with the Dillsburg Farmers Fair Parade.  Our current role involves providing communications support so that the Parade Chairperson, the Parade Marshals, and the Parade Staff in the Registration Office are within easy reach of each other.

Each year we look for 8 to 10 club member volunteers to step forward and be part of the support team.  We ask for about 5 hours of your time (Start 4 p.m. End about 9 p.m.)

The next Annual Dillsburg Farmers Fair Parade takes place Saturday evening October 18, 2025.

Each month at the CARC Monthly Meeting I look around the room and see the faces of our actively engaged club members.  Any one of these enthusiastic team members would make a perfect candidate as Membership Secretary.
We are fortunate to have a volunteer for this position who served in 2020 through 2025.   He is a good person to have in service to the club.
Perhaps you will read about how the Membership Secretary does his job and consider volunteering to be CARC Membership Secretary for 2026.  Who knows… you just might get a warm, fuzzy feeling.

At the time this post was created Field Day 2025 is many days in the future.  In astronomical terms that is a blink of the eye.  Even for earthly denizens, such as you and me, that time will fly by quickly.

Now is the time to prepare ourselves for Field Day.  Will you come for the food?  Will you come for the opportunity to get on the air and rack up some points for the club?  Will you come to see friends?

When you visit the MEMBER DOCUMENTS >>  FIELD DAY page (Look for Navigation Block 11) you will find a sign-up sheet and lots of Field Day information.

  • If you are ready to go on record with your FD plans please check-off some boxes and submit your form.
  • If 68 days is just a little bit too far in the future to make this type of commitment I invite you to take a look at the Sign-Up sheet to familiarize yourself with what the club Leadership has on our minds.

If you have questions about CARC Field Day plans , or if you would like to be part of the planning process, please consider attending our monthly meetings in-person or via Zoom.
